MATA PARKASH KAUR WELFARE CENTRE FOR HEARING & SPEECH HANDICAPPED

Mata Parkash Kaur Welfare Centre for Hearing & Speech handicapped, Karnal was established in the year 1987 in a building donated by Sh. Tek Chand Sehgal in the memory of his wife Late Smt. Parkash Kaur Sehgal with the objective of providing efficient, cordial and specialised services of education, treatment and rehabilitation to hearing impaired. The centre is not only catering the needs of hearing impaired of Haryana but also to the children from the adjoining states like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, U.P. and Delhi.

ACTIVITIES

Education & Residential Facilities: This centre imparts education to 110 students upto 8th standard by way of total communication methods which comprises of speech, lip-reading, visual training, touch sensation and gestures. It is well established fact that language deprivation is the most important problem for the deaf persons. More so, reading and writing skills are also dependent upon language skills. In order to overcome this lingual handicapness, Haryana Welfare Society for Hearing & Speech Handicapped, Panchkula has developed special syllabus for nursery to class 1st. In these four years special efforts are made to give the deaf children basis functional language and specks skills through lip reading, speech training. auditory training, touch sensation and gestures to prepare them for formal education. Besides, there are specially trained teachers to instruct these children. All class rooms are fitted with group hearing aids. And from 2nd to 8th standard the school curricular corresponds to the syllabus of Haryana Education Board, Bhiwani (Haryana)

        For the boys and girls coming from out side Karnal, the centre is maintaining two hostels for different age group. Upper age limit for the stay in the hostel for boys and girls is 18 years. Both the wings are supervised by the trained house mothers. 78 students are availing hostel facility.

Parents Counselling: Besides, the training of deaf children the parents counselling and guidance is must without parents awareness deaf education can not be completed. Therefore, time to time centre organises parents counselling program which helps the child to develop self confidence, high self esteem and the ability to adjust with others. Parents counselling focuses on the following areas:-

Sports and Cultural Activities: To provide an opportunity for students mental and physical growth and for their creative self expression, the children are encouraged to participate in indoor and outdoor games and in various cultural activities organised by the State, District Child Welfare Council, Red Cross Society and other voluntary/government institutions.

Vocational Training: From the year 2004-05 the centre has started vocational training with the help of Govt. Polytechnic, Nilokheri in the field of cutting and tailoring.
